Each
spring teams of 5 high school students prepare with a
teacher/coach to compete in the areas of aquatics,
forestry, soils, wildlife and a current issue in natural
resources. Regional winners advance to the state and
then the national competition. The Northeastern
Illinois Envirothon is organized by local soil and water
conservation districts and the Conservation Foundation.
This competition is held over two days in early April.
One competition is held for high schools in Cook,
DuPage, Kane and Will counties. Another competition is
held for high schools in Boone, DeKalb, Lake, and
Winnebago counties.

What is an
Envirothon?
þ
Friendly competition-
Competition inspires and challenges individuals to work
as a team. At the Envirothon, students will also have
the opportunity to network with teams from other high
schools.
þ
Team building- Teams of 5
high school students are formed at the beginning of the
school year. Under the leadership of an advisor, the
team prepares for the Envirothon throughout the year.
During the Envirothon, the team’s score counts, not
individual scores.
þ
Education- Students study
five different topics; aquatics, forestry, soils,
wildlife and a current issue that changes each year.
þ
An opportunity to explore
environmental careers- Envirothon exams and
presentations are given by environmental professionals.
þ
An outdoor experience-
During preparation students gain outdoor experience.
The Envirothon itself is held at a local, outdoor nature
facility.
þ
Nation-wide program-
Envirothon began in 1979 and has spread to more than 42
states and Canada.
